Design Process

I wanted to research and practically test the theory of 'Reactance'—how players react and behave when specifically told not to land on the same color tile. This interactive psychological game was designed to study player behavior and psychology.

Though it may seem like a small design tweak from the Color Switch game, the results of this experiment were quite surprising:

  • 60% of players struggled to follow the rule, finding it hard to land on a different color tile. Most of these were casual gamers or non-gamers.
  • 30% of players showed decent performance, initially landing on the same color tile but gradually understanding the rule and achieving better scores. These were hyper-casual, mobile gamers.
  • 10% of players excelled, quickly grasping the rule and making high scores. This group consisted of FPS and fast-paced hardcore gamers.

The results highlight that hardcore gamers are faster and more adaptive thinkers compared to casual or non-gamers, demonstrating a notable difference in cognitive flexibility and reaction times.
